Vote Coming Next Month On Taiwan Casino Resort

The Taiwan government took notice of what has become of Macau, and now they want a piece of the casino gambling pie. The Penghu County government has proposed a mega casino resort, but before it can become reality, local voters must approve its existence.

"Penghu citizens have had this idea for more than twenty years, and when we held a referendum before, support was strong," said Liu Mei-fan from Penghu County's tourism bureau, "There's a problem here. In the winter, we hit a low tourism season, so merchants have it tough ten."

If the casino resort is approved, merchants will have another problem-more merchants. The casino resort is expected to have duty-free shops, a golf course, convention center, hotels, and of course, a casino.

Taiwan's government has already had their say in the matter. Back in January, Parliament voted in favor of off-shore casino gambling, with a maximum of three casinos in Penghu.

US based casino companies will be watching next week's vote very closely. Harrah's Entertainment has already had representatives in Penghu to see the prospects of a casino in the region. The competition should a US based company enter the areas, would then be among the Penghu government project, the US company, and a project from British-based, AMZ Holdings.
