West Virginia Casino Lays Off Almost 100 Workers

The Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack & Resort is following the example that has been set by other casinos around the country. They have laid off ninety three of their employees in a cost cutting effort.

President and CEO of the racetrack, Bob Griffin, announced on Friday that the company would be slashing four percent of their workers. They now will operate with a total of 2,076 employees.

The casino has been hit hard by the economy. Gas prices have also played a part in revenue decreases, but fuel has dipped back down to around $2 a gallon. That leaves the economy as the main reason that revenue has dropped off.

Table games at the casino have stayed steady. People coming to play the slots have dwindled. Slot revenue dropped nearly $4 million in the third quarter. That means that the regulars who come to play cards have weathered the storm so far, but it does not mean that it will remain that way.

"This situation is no different than i other businesses. Jobs needed to be cut in response to the struggling economy. At least most of the jobs have been saved this time around," said Bryan Adeller.

While the Mountaineer Casino tries to get their finances in order, other casinos around the country are seeking ways to increase their business so they will not have to lay off workers.
