The state of Massachusetts is at a crossroads with both their state budget and the issue of gambling expansion. Governor Duval Patrick has been in favor of expanding gambling in the state, but his first attempt to change the laws fell on deaf ears in the legislature.

Now, new House Speaker Robert A. DeLeo is on his side on the issue, and DeLeo reaffirmed his position on Tuesday morning. he is in favor of expanded gambling and any other possible source of revenue for the state that could help with the budget.

DeLeo, in his news conference, warned of the upcoming budget cuts and how they will be drastic. He wants people to know that the road that lies ahead could still be a tough one, despite the money the state received from the stimulus package.

"This money, while a blessing, also creates a giant gap in local and state budgets when it inevitably dries up,' said DeLeo at a Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce breakfast, "Massachusetts cannot become captive to onetime revenue."

Governor Patrick ran for office a couple of years ago on a platform that was heavily in favor of expanded gambling. He attempted to have a casino plan put in place last year, but lawmakers voted against his proposal. He has vowed that he will continue his efforts to bring casinos to Massachusetts.
