With Economy Down, People Turn To Fake Chips At KC Casino
Usually counterfeit casino chips can be attributed to a group of people trying to get one over on an individual casino. In today's tough economic times, the fake chips are being used simply because people do not have money.
The Argosy Casino Hotel & Spa has reported to authorities in Kansas City that they have been scammed using counterfeit $100 chips. The
casino
claims to have lost $100,000 in the scam.
"The economy is driving some people to do things they would not normally do. This guy must have just figured that this was the best way to get some money for his family," said Brenda Freemont, a slots player at Argosy Casino.
Highway Patrol officers have been perplexed by the creativity of the person responsible for the fake chips. "These were really high quality, the best I've seen," said Lt. Bob Zubeck from the Highway Patrol.
The casino itself is recovering from the scam, but they are happy they figured it out before they lost even more money. "It could have been worse...They've (scammers) done a fairly good job. They were very hard to spot," said Argosy Casino General Manager Ameet Patel.
The police have detained one person, but have yet to charge them with a crime. The investigation is ongoing and the casino and the authorities are working to ensure they get the right suspects.
