With Jai-Alai Buy Purchase - Boyd Gaming Propagates its Bets

Voted Top Online Casino Several Years in a Row!

The purchase of Dania Jai-Alai for $152. 2 million announced last week isn't the biggest bet in Boyd Gaming Corp.'s history. Not when you consider Echelon Place, a $4 billion project to be launched later this year when Boyd closes the historic Stardust Hotel in its hometown of Las Vegas. A new casino hotel with 5,300 rooms is expected to open in 2010.

In comparison, the plans for Dania Jai-Alai seem fairly modest. Boyd plans a new area for 1,500 slot machines, a poker room, some restaurants and lounges. The changes could cost $75 million, according to one analyst's estimate. But both projects are examples of Boyd's strategy. Since 1998, it has searched for ways to diversify its gambling assets so that it competes in as many geographic areas and markets as possible.

Boyd reasons that its growth is tied to seizing new opportunities when regulators make them available. It is the first Las Vegas firm through the door in Florida after voters approved slot machines at Broward pari-mutuels.
