Women Problem Gambling Television Special Airing On A&E Tonight
When it comes to problem gambling, much like the rest of society it used to be a man's world. Now, however, similar to other areas of growth, women have become almost half of the compulsive gamblers and it is one place they did not wish for equality.
Tonight, A&E spotlights the problem of women gamblers. The show will air at 9 P.M. and focuses on an intervention that takes place at Williamsville Wellness in Hanover, Virginia.
"It is great that people are starting to realize the problems that gambling can present in a society. A&E should be commended for bringing this issue to the forefront and showing people that there is help available if needed," said Professor William C. Bruskell.
There are only a few licensed treatment centers in the US for problem gambling and the Williamsville Center is one of them. It was built more than 200 years ago and is now helping compulsive gamblers with their disease.
Sherman Master, MD is the clinical director at the Center and manages a full staff that includes, psychologists, massage therapists, specialized counselors, peer counselors, personal trainers, and art therapists. They all work in harmony to ensure the best possible stay for their patients.
"This television special is one that was done with class and dignity. It will inspire those who need help to get it, and will enlighten others about the warning signs and hazards of compulsive gambling," said Bruskell.
Women now make up forty six percent of problem gamblers as opposed to three percent only ten years ago. The loosening of gambling laws in many states gives people more outlets to gamble. Unfortunately, the states that are expanding these laws are not yet focusing on problem gambling as they should.
