Women Upset That Male Competed In Atlantic City Poker Tournament
Women are usually the gender that takes exception to being excluded from an event because of their sex. In Atlantic City, however, there was a reversal of fate and it was women that were upset that a male won a ladies poker tournament.
The event took place at the Borgata Hotel and Casino and not only did a man enter the field of 260 women, he won the tournament. Abraham Korotki claimed that he was just tuning up for a World Poker Tour main event that was being held in Atlantic City in the future.
At the time he entered, there was no major reaction from the women players. When he won, however, the mood quickly turned sour with some women in the audience trying to figure out why he entered the tournament.
"It makes no sense with all of the tournaments that are available at these casinos that this guy would enter a ladies event," said Sharon Balsinger, "I guess he felt like it would be easier to beat women, so he gave it a shot."
Actually, according to Korotki, he had not been playing a lot of poker and he just wanted to tune up his game before playing in a big money tournament.
"I didn't do it for the money," said Korotki, "I'm preparing to go into a main event this week, and I needed some practice time. I hadn't played in tournaments for a while." While some women were upset that the male entered, others had a slightly more grounded point of view.
"We have been trying to gain equal ground with men for years," said Fran Hinkle, "If we want to be allowed to play in events with them, then there should be no reason that they should be forbidden to enter a ladies event."
The law says that even if they wanted to, the women would not have been able to keep Korotki out of the tournament. Joe Lupo, the Borgata's Senior Vice President said in a statement that by law the casino must allow any person over the age of twenty-one to participate in their tournaments.
