Wonderland Greyhound Park and Suffolk Downs have united. They are doing so to strengthen their chances on receiving a casino gambling license should the state move in that direction.

Suffolk would have the option to purchase Wonderland under the agreement that was reached this week. The fact that the two racetracks have decided to work together is a step in the right direction.

"We have been working on this kind of agreement for a while but the time has been well spent because we now have gotten it right," said Richard Fields, the majority owner of Suffolk. The two tracks have been trying to get the deal done for several years, but each time they were close something slowed the process.

"We have today an excellent understanding that will protect existing jobs as much as possible into the future and will commit the joint resources of our companies to the goal of a premium resort-style casino which will bring new jobs to the area and provide the state with much needed revenue," said Fields.

The reason the two have been in discussions in the first place was to position themselves for the possibility of going after one license when casino gambling is legalized. They stand a much better chance to gain the license together than they did alone.

Many analysts believe that the distraction of the two company's not being able to work out a deal played a major role in legislators voting against Governor Duval Patrick's casino proposal in March.
