Workers Union Strike Closes Casinos In Ontario
Unions have been becoming more and more prevalent in casinos around the country. Foxwoods dealers in Connecticut decided to unionize at the end of last year. Other casino workers have followed suit.
In Ontario, two casinos were shut down overnight after the Canadian Auto Workers Union began a strike. The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation shut down the casinos.
While the casinos were shut down, negotiations are ongoing, and the two sides are, "hopeful that an agreement can soon be reached," said the OLG. While they were optimistic, others were none.
"Both sides are extremely far apart on wages, working conditions and benefits," said Brian Stevens, a union representative. He also said that after midnight it was "painfully obvious" that no agreement would be reached.
The Auto Workers Union represents over 700 employees at the Brantford Casino. They also represent workers from Woodbine Racetrack and Sudbury. They have expanded their efforts in unionizing workers in casinos around the world.
Up until recently, workers in casinos had been at the bottom of the pool when it comes to benefits. They worked whatever hours the casinos chose, and most were working without any benefits.
Since the unions got involved, working conditions have improved at many casinos. New smoking laws have also helped improve conditions at various casinos, and wages are beginning to go up for workers.
