A New Deadline Set In U.S. And Antigua Gambling Dispute
The United States and Antigua have been locked in a dispute over online gambling for what seems like a lifetime. The two sides continue to claim that they are talking of a solution, but deadlines continue to pass without resolution.
Now, a new deadline has been put into effect. October 1st is the day that the dispute needs to be settled by. Both sides are confident that a deadline can be reached by that date.
The issue stems from the UIGEA which severely damaged revenue to gambling companies that were based in Antigua. It has already been determined that Antigua could bring sanctions against the U.S. for the damage that has been done.
The two have been negotiating a settlement for years and have come to no agreement as of yet. The WTO has yet to get involved other than setting the deadlines, but if they do get involved it could have devastating affects to the United States.
Still, the sides feel they can work out a resolution on their own. Mark Mendel represents Antigua at the WTO and says that he fells that a resolution could be reached, but that these negotiations are, "delicate and take some time."
The "some time" has been several years, and the two sides are running out of it. October 1st will be the new end date and hopefully this time that deadline will be of some importance.
