For the past year, Governor Robert Riley has told anyone that will listen that video machine gambling is illegal in Alabama. The legality of these machines is currently up in the air in the state, but lawmakers may now look to remove the doubt.

Representative Marcel Black has grown tired of hearing the gambling debate, so he has proposed legislation that would allow non-tribal establishments to operate the same games that are legal at the Indian facilities. The Bill will most likely run into stiff competition.

There is a strong divide right now between lawmakers who want gambling to be offered legally in the state, and those who want gambling completely gone. Riley is part of the group that wants gambling out of Alabama.

The governor has set up the Task Force on Illegal Gambling. The task force has spend the better part of the past year raiding establishments that the governor believes are running illegal video gambling machines.

Recently, Governor Riley won a major battle in the Alabama state Supreme Court, but there are still other cases involving the legality of the bingo machines' legality.

Video gambling machines will be the target of a Bill that Black plans on introducing later in the legislative session. That Bill would legalize video gambling and tax the industry. The legislation would also call for commission in Alabama to regulate the gambling activity.
