Alabama Stalemate On Bingo Bill Broken By Senate
Concern has been growing among representatives in Alabama that a proposed bingo gambling will destroy the rest of the legislative session. On Tuesday afternoon that concern was put to bed.
Lt. Governor Jim Folsom abruptly ended a Senate battle over a bingo gambling Bill that could have destroyed the rest of the session. He approved the carrying over of the Bill which has had the Senate tied up since february.
"We couldn't have got past the log jam without your help, Lt. Gov. Folsom,"said Senator Roger Bedford. Now, with only five days left, the Senate can once again focus on issues that have been taking a back seat to the bingo Bill.
Whether anything gets done during the rest of the session is another question. The bad feelings that were created over the bingo Bill might now linger, causing opposition to any possible new Bill's being passed.
The bingo legislation was being discussed for months, and finally the time spent on the Bill came to an end on Tuesday, too late for some representatives. "It was obvious they were not going to get the votes," said Senator Phil Poole.
