Governor Robert Riley and his Task Force on Illegal Gambling in Alabama had another embarrassing day on Friday. The Task Force was set to raid two different gambling establishments, but were turned away by the law in both cases.
One of the raids was set to take place at the VictoryLand complex. Just hours before the raid, however, a similar situation played out as the one a couple weeks ago at Country Crossings. A judge issued an order at 5:30AM blocking the raid.
The judge ordered that no raid could be carried out until a hearing next week. The Task Force had the same setback when it attempted to raid Country Crossings, but by the time of the hearing in that case, the search warrant had expired.
The other raid set to take place Friday was at Country Crossings. Over 100 officers met at the facility prepared to sweep in and raid the establishment. Lawyers, however, would not allow the officers inside because they had no search warrant. The lawyers informed the officers that they were trespassing, and the number of officers quickly fell to around fifteen.
Attorney John Tyson Jr. is the new head of the Task Force, and he was in Montgomery on Friday asking the state Supreme Court to ask that a new judge be put on the case of Country Crossings. he also asked the Supreme Court to lift the ruling blocking the raid at VictoryLand.
VictoryLand is the biggest employer in Macon County, according to former state Senator George Clay. If the Task Force is successful in raiding the facility, the county stands to lose millions of dollars in tax revenue.
