Appeals Court Gives In Slightly To NFL In Sports Gambling Case
The NFL is used to crushing anything in its way on the path to being the most arrogant sports league in the US. They met their match, however, with the US government-sort of. The NFL had lost their initial attempt to stop Delaware from offering sports betting.
They then appealed the ruling, and at the same time, asked the federal appeals court to expedite the legal process. This past week, they won the right to a speedy court case. The federal appeals court ruled that the case would be expedited.
On August 24th, oral arguments will begin in the case. It is not likely the NFL and other sports leagues who have joined forces to stop the Delaware betting, will succeed. Delaware has had the law on their side through the entire process.
This spring, lawmakers in Delaware voted in favor of allowing sports betting in the state. They cited the need for the revenue that would be generated from the gambling. The NFL and other leagues quickly launched their legal attack to stop the betting from becoming reality.
Ironically, the only major sport that has events in Delaware is NASCAR. They have refused to join the lawsuit of the other sports leagues, leaving many to wonder what the NFL is afraid of.
As previously reported here on CGW, the NFL is concerned that Delaware will only open the door for sports betting throughout the country. In almost every state, laws are changing to allow casino gambling, and sports betting may be the next step towards full Las Vegas-style casinos, with sports books included.
