Arkansas Lottery Gambling Begins With Adjustments Being Made
There is a pretty basic understanding in colleges around the country that gambling is prohibited. In Arkansas, however, the campus gambling laws are being reviewed thanks to the new state lottery.
Lottery gambling began last week in Arkansas and whether for or against the lottery, people in the state have had to come to the realization that the lottery is here to stay. That has caused several different groups and organizations to review procedure involving gambling.
First and foremost, gambling hot lines have been set up and the state is moving quickly to get treatment programs set up as well. With the amount of gambling that will take place, preventative measures must be taken.
For colleges in the state it is a little bit trickier. The money generated from the lottery is going towards scholarships to get into state colleges, yet gambling is prohibited on many college campuses.
That has left administrators having to answer the question of what will happen to a student if they are caught scratching off a lottery ticket on campus. Several campuses have already decided that they will turn their heads away from the lottery gambling.
"We're not encouraging participation in the lottery," said David Crouch, Spokesman for Harding University, to the Associated Press, "But we're not disciplining students who do play."
The first couple months of any new gambling venture are always rocky no matter how prepared the state is. In Arkansas, they are only one week in, and the adjustments to the lottery gambling are already under way.
