Bingo gambling for charity has always been popular among fund-raising organizations. The game is simple and people enjoy playing, so it was the perfect fit for anyone trying to raise money for a good cause.

On Thursday, these organizations received a break from the state Senate in Arkansas. The lawmakers voted in favor of legislation that would lower the tax rate paid by charity bingo from one cent to three-tenths of a cent.

Another rule was changed in the same Bill. Different organizations could not have games at the same location under the old law, but now that portion of the law has been eliminated.

"The Bill is simply making things a little easier for organizations that are trying to do good by the community. A little tax break goes a long way in the current economy," said Francis McDivil.

The House originally proposed the Bill and it and did not receive much opposition from the Senate. The taxes received last year from the charity bingo games was just over $1 million. Almost half of that money was paid to a regulating division within the state.

The original proposal that was offered by Tracy Pennartz called for the elimination of the one cent tax altogether. Pennartz was proposing that the oversight division be eliminated and local law enforcement take over role of regulating the bingo games.
