Arkansas Votes to Allow Charitable Bingo and Raffle Games
Arkansas voters passed a constitutional amendment that would allow bingo games for charity purposes only.
The law would allow charities that have been established and run in the state for at least five years the ability to utilize the charity bingo games.
The legislature now has until the end of winter to establish laws for the new bingo games and some people are worried that the laws may create inadvertent loopholes for commercial gambling companies and/or Indian tribes to enter Arkansas with casinos.
Although the state could tax proceeds, Benny Petrus, Arkansas' new House speaker, believes legislators won't seek tax money from the charitable games as the state will have an estimated $721 million surplus at the end of the year.
Petris said he and other legislators will act quickly to write the new laws enabling charitable bingo and raffles in Arkansas.
