Attorney General Troy King Disputes Gambling Campaign Accusation
Birmingham Attorney Luther Strange is opposing Troy King in the race to become the Attorney general of Alabama. Strange has now brought out the heavy artilary in an attempt to win the AG office.
Strange has accused King of accepting campaign donations from those with gambling interests such as VictoryLand owner Milton McGregor. Strange connects the dots between money that McGregor gave to a political action committee, and then funds given from that committee to King for his campaign.
"It's pretty straight forward," said Strange, "He made a commitment if knew money was from gambling interests he would return the money. I want him to honor his pledge." King had vowed not to accept any funds from those within the gambling industry.
Strange has done all of his homework for this allegation, but King has now denied that he even took the money in the first place. According to spokesman Jonathan Gray, King never accepted the gambling interest money in the first place.
"Troy King has instructed us that under no circumstances does he want to take any campaign contributions from gambling," said Gray. He went on to say that the reason that the checks from the PAC do not appear on King's campaign finance report is because the AG never accepted the checks.
The battle over the gambling issue in Alabama has heated up in the last couple of months. On Thursday, King had a closed door meeting with Governor Robert Riley to discuss the future of the Task Force on Illegal Gambling.
The governor started the Task Force last year, and King believes the operation has been running recklessly. King was given the authority on Monday by an Alabama judge to take control of the Task Force. The AG has not yet given an indication as to whether or not he will go that route.
