Attorney General Wants Stronger Gambling Laws In Massachusetts
The perception around the country is that will expanded gambling comes expanded crime. Although this is not factually the case, Massachusetts is prepared to make the laws stronger regarding gambling related crimes.
"There's no question that the issues we raise have come to the forefront, because there appears to be great interest in the Legislature to move forward on gambling," said Attorney General Martha Coakley. The attorney general is actually not even against the gambling expansion.
Lawmakers in the state of Massachusetts are strongly pushing for casino gambling expansion. Neighboring states have expanded their gambling laws, and Massachusetts residents are currently taking their money out of state to do their casino gambling.
The new call to action from Coakley has to do with organized crime, wiretapping, and money laundering. Those are all offenses that have been associated to gambling in the past, but some believe those issues will be resolved by legalizing gambling.
"The reality is that these organized crime operations are in business because people do not have a legal place to go to do their gambling," said observer Mark Belms, "when they have legal options, these crime organizations will be less effective."
That may be the overwhelming opinion of many, but still Coakley wants to ensure that if these organizations do try and operate in the state, they will be met with strict penalties.
