The debate over video gambling has now been going on for quite some time in Alabama. With each passing week, it seems like there is more evidence of how residents of the state are in favor of legalized video gambling.

The latest indication of how voters feel on the issue comes from a poll that was released by Auburn University. The Ask Alabama poll asked adults several questions related to gambling in the state, and with each answer came more reason to believe that Governor Robert Riley is fighting a losing battle.

Sixty percent of those polled claimed that they would be in favor of video gambling, with the revenue generated going towards education. Sixty-eight percent support a state lottery. The lottery numbers are up two percentage points from the last Ask Alabama poll in 2005. The video gambling figures are down only one percent.

"It is becoming more clear that Alabamians are not in favor of the current attacks Governor Riley and his Task Force on Illegal Gambling are conducting on the gambling industry in the state," said Gaming Analyst Steve Schwartz, "Unfortunately for Alabama residents in favor of gambling, the governor appears prepared to continue his raids."

The people of the state may get a reprieve, however. Lawmakers are considering legislation that would put the future of video gambling in the hands of Alabama voters. If approved, the question of whether to allow ten gambling establishments would go to voters, most likely in November.

The debate over the issue grew more heated this past week. Attorney general Troy King warned the Task Force to go about their business in a more appropriate manner. King left the door open to taking control of the Task Force in the future if they do not abide by his wishes.

Governor Riley and Task Force Head John Tyson immediately challenged the remarks from King, claiming they will continue to do business as usual with the Task Force. This week, legislators may discuss the proposed legislation.
