The Australian government is getting more involved in helping problem gamblers through new laws they are introducing in the NSW parliament today. The laws are aimed at keeping people from getting themselves in financial trouble by gambling.

The Gaming Machines Act was put in place back in 2001 and the time has come for the government to make some changes to that Act. The government has assessed the situation and believes that more regulation is necessary to continue a healthy gambling future.

One of the changes that is being presented is a reduction in the number of poker machines in the country. The government is trying to slow the growth of casino gambling and also prevent problem gambling.

The other change will be a significant one for gamblers who run out of money in a casino. Cash withdrawals on credit cards will be banned inside of casinos. Again, the government is trying to find ways to help problem gamblers.

"The impact of problem gambling on people and their families can be devastating and lead to depression, anxiety, financial and legal troubles or even family breakdown, " said Gaming and Racing Minister Kevin Greene.

In order to come up with the best possible solution to helping problem gamblers, the government met with industry insiders, community groups, and problem gambling counsellors.
