Barney Frank Gearing Up For Fall Online Gambling Debates In US
Representative Barney Frank has been a proponent of legalized online gambling for years. Now, Frank is gearing up for what he hopes will be a successful run through Congress on the way to new Internet gambling laws in the US.
Representative Frank has been this close before. He has tried to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act last year, but to no avail. That was when the Republicans controlled government. Now, Frank and his fellow Democrats are in control.
"If anyone believes that this time around will not be different for Rep. Frank and his allies, then they have not been watching politics closely," said observer Neal Bresk, "the US needs to change their online gambling laws to show other nations that they no longer are going to disrespect international agreements."
One of those agreements is with the European Union. The European Commission has warned the US that their Internet gambling laws violate EU trade agreements. The current administration has shown a willingness to comply with such agreements.
Rep. Frank has already taken the first step towards compliance. He wants the UIGEA overturned, although his motives are different than those of the EC. Frank believes that all people in the US should have the option of playing casino games for money online from the privacy of their homes.
Frank is not being met with much resistance to his new proposed legislation as of yet. In fact, some Republicans have joined in the fight for Internet freedom. Frank currently has fifty-four co-signers for his online gambling Bill.
Senator Robert Menendez has introduced similar legislation in the Senate. Menendez proposed legislation that would legalize online poker. Frank is looking to legalize all forms of Internet gambling in his proposal to the House.
Frank has been busy dealing with the economy being the head of the House Financial Committee, but he has stated that he wants the online gambling issue visited in the Fall.
