Barney Frank Plans to Introduce Gambling Repeal Bill Thursday
Congressman Barney Frank said at a bankers committee meeting today that he will introduce his bill to repeal the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act on Thursday. Details of the bill will be revealed by Frank at a 10 a.m. press conference.
Frank said today that it was beyond him how a bill could have passed that dictates if an adult is or isn't allowed to gamble with their own money in the confounds of their own home.
The UIGEA was passed last year as an attachment to the Safe Port Act and in the recent hearings Senator Jon Kyl, the cosponsor of the bill, questioned Alberto Gonzalez about his plans to implement the regulations. Gonzales seemed annoyed with the questions by Kyl because of their irrelevance to the hearings. Gonzales attempted to explain to Kyl that regulations were not as easy as he Kyl made it sound, but Kyl was adamant about getting a confirmation from Gonzales.
Meanwhile, Frank, head of the Financial Service Committee, knows better than most how impossible regulations will be. The law puts it on the banks to determine who they should or not transfer money from, however, the banks do not have the resources to implement the regulations.
A new petition that already has over 1,000 legitimate signatures expresses the public dissent for the UIGEA.
