The House Rules Committee on Monday agreed by voice vote to allow 20 minutes of debate today and a vote on an amendment by Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev., to eliminate all exceptions to an Internet gambling ban.
Berkley's amendment is an effort to derail a bill by Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and Jim Leach, R-Iowa, to prohibit online wagering.
"This (Goodlatte-Leach) bill claims to ban all forms of online gambling but it specifically exempts betting upon horse racing and state owned and operated lotteries," Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich. told the committee.
Conyers is co-sponsoring Berkley's amendment with Rep. Robert Wexler, D-Fla.. Berkley and Wexler did not attend Monday's hearing.
The amendment did not pass the house and the bill will stay as written and move on the to United States Senate.
