BetOnSports Case Takes A Blow After Three Plead Guilty
The United States have been trying to find a way to have online gambling related criminal charges stick. Up until Wednesday, it was unclear whether anyone was going to be found guilty in a case involving online gambling.
That answer was answered emphatically Thursday. Three men plead guilty to online gambling related charges stemming from a case involving BetOnSports. Although there were convictions, they were not exactly what the government had in mind.
The three men that plead guilty on Thursday were involved in the operation of the website, but only from a marketing angle. William Hernan Lenis plead guilty to interstate transportation of gambling paraphernalia.
He admitted that his role in the operation was to send logo-wrapped trucks to sporting events around the country. The trucks would be equipped with phones and Internet service where gamblers could place bets.
The object of the trucks were to gather signatures to try and change the existing gambling laws and to recruit new customers. Lenis admitted that he did not work alone, and that his family usually drove around with him.
His company was also responsible for sending millions of ads out on behalf of BetOnSports. Will Lenis plead guilty to transmission of wagering information and Manny Lenis plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of failing to pay a wagering tax.
