The case that started almost a year ago against online gambling operator BetOnSports PLC came to an end on Thursday as the company pleaded guilty to United States racketeering charges. The company agreed to supply evidence against their founder, Gary Kaplan, in order avoid further criminal charges.

BetOnSports PLC was once a publicly traded company in the UK stock exchange, but they exited the exchange after charges were brought on them by the United States. The US Attorney in this case, Catherine Hanaway, claimed that today's events would "officially end the BetOnSports illegal Internet gambling empire."

The sentencing for BetOnSports is set for October 19th of this year.

The company faces a fine up to $500,000 and possible asset forfeitures. The company is also subject to a permanent injunction that requires it to repay wagers received from U.S. gamblers held by the company as of June 1, 2006.

Gary Kaplan had warrants our for his arrest for months before he was captured and brought into custody in the Dominican Republic. Earlier in the month he pleaded innocent to charges of racketeering, but BetOnSports agreeing to help investigators against Kaplan is sure to hurt his chances of proving himself innocent.

The case against BoS and its founder Gary Kaplan are important for the US in order to show its seriousness in shutting down Internet gambling in the country. The cases are even more important now that many US representatives are pushing for a repeal of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, the law passed deceitfully last year which is aiding in these arrests.
