Bookie Pleads Guilty Is Fined and Sentenced to Stay Home
A Vermilion Parish man was sentenced Tuesday to six-months home confinement and two years probation for his role in a multimillion-dollar gambling operation based in Milton.
Jason Paul Abate was one of five people charged in the investigation, including former Vermilion Parish Police Juror Ernal J. Broussard.
Abate pleaded guilty in February to gambling charges for performing an assortment of jobs for the sports bookmaking operation ? taking bets over the telephone, picking up and delivering payments, and ?grading papers? to determine which customers won or lost money.
Prosecutors allege in court documents that the organization operated for more than 10 years and received gross bets of $1 million or more per week at its height during football season, a peak time for sports betting.
Bets from across the country were placed via telephone and payments sent out in the mail, according to court documents.
