Bus Break Down On Way To Gambling Rally Helps Cause In Kentucky
Not much can signal the need for expanded revenue in the state of Kentucky then when a bus carrying gambling supporters to a rally breaks down. That is exactly what happened on Wednesday afternoon to Ellis Park employees.
A group of Ellis Park employees boarded the chartered bus and headed towards the rally in Frankfort. The bus, however, broke down about fourteen miles from Frankfort. Some of the passengers on the bus were lighthearted in their assessment of the situation.
"We can't even get buses that work properly on the streets in this state," said Fran Barry, "perhaps if we had more money from expanded gambling, these types of things would not happen with such frequency."
Ellis Park is one of the tracks that believes they need expanded gambling in the form of slot machines to continue to operate. Many of the tracks in the state have had to cut purses because they are financially strapped.
Governor Steve Beshear appears to be in favor of the expanded gambling. He had at first not placed the issue on the agenda at a special legislative session this week. He did, however, change his mind the next day and include the gambling issue.
The Kentucky House Licensing and Occupations Committee was set to hear the gambling Bill on Wednesday. Supporters and opponents both showed up to have their points heard by the committee.
