Businessman Trump Likes US Model Of Regulated Online Gambling
Donald Trump has a storied history in two areas, business, and casino gambling. Representative Barney Frank is attempting to bring the two together in the US and Trump supports the idea.
Despite the resistance of some lawmakers, the online gambling debate is heating up on Capitol Hill. Rep. Frank advanced his online gambling regulation legislation through the House Finance Committee this week, and it has people from all walks of life weighing in.
Rep. Spencer Bacchus, an opponent of the bill, believes that by granting access to online gambling, too many young adults would be put at risk. Bacchus also claims that problem gambling would rise in the country. Trump, however, believes there is no denying that Internet gambling is becoming a reality.
"Why lose all those billions of revenue?" said Trump, as reported by The New York Post. "Online gambling is going to happen, so we might as well have it work to the public's advantage."
That has been the point that millions of online poker players and Rep. Frank have been driving home since the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was created in 2006. The criminalization of activities relating to online gambling is leaving US residents open to corruption from offshore company's where the underground gambling is currently taking place.
Trump has had vested interests in several casinos, and his stance is one that is starting to be shared by other land-based casino company's. One company, Wynn Resorts, and their owner, Steve Wynn, continue to assert that online gambling would be bad for the land-based casino industry.
Other company's such as Harrah's Entertainment, have embraced the Internet gambling phenomenon. Harrah's has launched several online casinos in Europe, and is in position to do so in the US should the laws change and the company be granted a license.
