Canadian Official Proposes Online Casino Ad Ban
In Ontario, Canada, one lawmaker is proposing a new bill that would ban online advertising of casino gambling websites. The new proposal would make advertising online gambling sites illegal under the federal Criminal Code in Canada.
Government Services Minister Gerry Phillips will introduce the bill to ban online casino ads, contending that internet gambling is preying on children and is hurting their youth.
According to Phillips, "There's a substantial number of young people who are participating on these illegal gambling sites and its causing problems".
According to the opponents of the proposed legislation, the main problem of internet gambling is the impact on Canada's horseracing industry and lotteries. Online gambling is the only form of gambling in Canada that is still growing. Of course, Phillips said the new proposal would make exceptions for online racetrack betting.
"In the province of Ontario we've got a very large horseracing industry, the breeders, the people who run the farms and the racetracks, and it's very reputable business," said Phillips.
As you know, similar exceptions were made for the US horseracing industry in the Leach/Goodlatte Internet Gambling Bill.
