Casino Debate Set To Take Place In Delaware House
Delaware is well on its way to being a major player in the gambling industry in the Northeast. This week, the debate will begin in the Delaware House over casino expansion in the state.
Already last year, Delaware took a bold step in legalizing sports betting. Although they did not get the full sports betting they were searching for, the state did become the first East Coast state to allow any form of sports betting outside of horse and dog racing.
Now, Majority Leader Pete Schwartzkopf is filing an amendment to his gambling expansion legislation that calls for two additional casinos to be authorized. One of the changes to the Bill is that whoever applies for a gaming license in Sussex County will not have to have a harness racing license.
Thursday is the day the new proposal will be debated in the House. If it is approved, it would be another step for Delaware in the race to become the gambling capital of the East.
Pennsylvania has made taken big strides in the past year, as has New York, Maryland, Connecticut, and even New Jersey. Atlantic City is no longer considered the only casino gambling destination in the area.
Earlier this year, Pennsylvania lawmakers approved table games for all of their state casinos. In December of last year, Pennsylvania casinos had higher slot revenue than New Jersey casinos for the first time ever. The addition of table games is expected to bring Pennsylvania casinos on par with New Jersey in future competition.
