Casino Opponents in Rhode Island Launch Web site
The major anti-casino group in West Warwick has launched a Web site assailing the proposed casino resort, ratcheting up its campaign to defeat a constitutional amendment on the November ballot that would allow the project.
The group, West Warwick Citizens Against the Casino, has been significantly outgunned in its public-relations battle with Harrah's Entertainment, a multinational behemoth with billions of dollars in yearly revenue and an immense advertising budget.
The local group, a political action committee, has no headquarters or paid staff. Members work out of their living rooms and use Venus Pizza, on Nooseneck Hill Road in Coventry, owned by Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis, a Coventry Democrat, as their meeting space.
Frank Lombardo, the group's president, says he is undaunted. This week, after nearly six years in existence, the group finally opened a post office box. Late last week, it launched a Web site,
