Casino Labor Union a Possibility in Nova Scotia
According to a recent press release, workers at Casino Nova Scotia in Canada will meet today at the Citadel Halifax Hotel to discuss the possibility of forming a Casino Workers Union.
Employees working at the Casino Nova Scotia in Halifax created this idea just over a month ago in order to win increased earnings, higher benefits, job security, and overall better treatment. These workers, who are paid by the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation (GCGC), have chosen to come together and form a union with the help of organizers and members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 902.
"Despite the huge revenues and profits of the Halifax Casino, gambling industry employees in Nova Scotia are the most underpaid and have the lowest level of benefits and job security of any casino or racetrack across Canada," said SEIU Canada National Organizer Tony Tracy.
"Many of these workers are paid near the provincial minimums, in a gaming sector which is very lucrative and which has far higher compensation practices than the remainder of Canada".
"Casino laborers in Halifax and throughout Nova Scotia deserve the same level of pay and job security that have been won by workers in other provinces," said Tracy.
"As the cost of living in Halifax exceeds those of some of the highest levels of cities across Canada and with an employer that is extremely profitable, it is unacceptable that these workers are not compensated at a higher level."
Officials from the Casino Novia Scotia were unavailable for comment Sunday afternoon. The casino is expected to call a formal press conference discussing the matter this week.
