Chance vs. Skill Issue in Games Suit
Prosecutors liken them to illegal gambling machines, but attorneys for one of the businesses profiting from the machines say they're skill-based games that have nothing to do with chance. The case, which stems from a raid last fall at a game room on South Arlington Street, was heard this week by Akron Municipal Judge Eve Belfance, who has yet to reach a decision. Law-enforcement agencies have been cracking down on places that have the machines that display puzzles on a screen and give players credits for solving them. When the games are over, players get a payout for solving the puzzles correctly.
In November, police seized 12 electronic machines from the Arlington Game Room, in the 1800 block of South Arlington.
The operators of the business were charged with operating a gambling house and gambling, which are misdemeanors. On Friday, prosecutors argued that the machines too closely resemble slot machines, with ringing noises and screens that show rows of shapes and objects like hearts, cherries and clovers.
