Around the US one of the newest forms of online gambling takes place inside of Internet cafes. The cafes are being used as fronts for owners to run illegal slot machines and card games on computer screens in the establishments.
Law enforcement officials are not oblivious to the problem. In the past couple of years, authorities have spent time raiding these Internet cafes for illegal gambling. In some cases, the court system backed the cafes, while in others the prosecutors have proven their cases.
Chesapeake, Virginia City Council members had heard the buzz surrounding a growing number of Internet cafe businesses in the city. Complaints from the public have caused the Council to take an interest in the goings-on at the Internet cafes.
"It's interesting that they're providing this 'wholesome' service to the community," said City Council member C.E. Hayes Jr. "Then why is it that you have to be eighteen to enter? Any of our citizens can go into any library and use the Internet for free."
The Internet cafe owners claim they are simply providing a service. When Councilman Hayes Jr. visited one of the establishments, however, he saw something different. Lines of computers with their screens on Texas Hold'em and slot-like games. That visit has prompted increased scrutiny into the businesses.
In the past year, the number of Internet cafes in Chesapeake has grown from one to five. With no police interaction taking place, city residents fear that more of the illegal businesses will open up. It is a fear that the City Council is now taking very seriously.
North Carolina has already banned the Internet cafes that offer these gambling services and Virginia could soon do the same. Land-based casinos have become legal in many states in recent years, and the Internet cafes are thought to be a revenue drain for these legal casinos.
