Construction Workers Support Casinos In Massachusetts

On Thursday, the public had their chance to tell lawmakers how they felt about casino expansion in Massachusetts. The early indication is that residents of the state are strongly behind casino gambling.

Over 200 construction workers showed up to voice their support for casinos in Massachusetts Thursday. The workers understand that if casino resorts are approved that many local construction jobs would be needed. This comes at a crucial time for workers who have been laid off because of the slow economy.

"There is no wonder why construction workers want the casino plan to become reality," said Gaming Analyst Brad Dawkins, "For them, it means paying the bills and putting food on the table for their families. It is an important issue to these workers in Massachusetts."

Other residents of Massachusetts showed their support for casino gambling expansion when they voted Governor Duval Patrick into office. Patrick ran his campaign on a strong pro-gambling platform, and the voters responded by giving him their support.

Patrick now also has the support of some key lawmakers. When he attempted to pass legislation last year that would have allowed for casino resorts, it was opposed by then-House Speaker Salvatore DiMasi.

Robert DeLeo has since replaced DiMasi, and is in favor of casino gambling expansion. Senate President Therese Murray has also thrown her support behind the casino idea. According to the construction workers present on Thursday, new casinos could mean up to 20,000 new jobs that could be created.
