The Cordish Cos. is planning on building a slot casino in Anne Arundel County, but they may have some legal challenges ahead before that facility becomes a reality. This past week, a group trying to stop the casino was successful in their first step.
Shortly after the state gave approval for the casino, opponents of the slots establishment started to collect signatures to have the issue go to a vote in November. This week, over 19,000 signatures were accepted, and if they are certified, the referendum will appear on the ballot in November.
The Cordish Cos., however, believes that many of the signatures collected are bogus. They have filed a suit to declare the petition invalid because of the methods that were used to gain the signatures.
"Anyone can have signatures," said David Cordish, President of the Cordish Cos., "but the question is whether they are valid, and these are not."
Cordish claims that many of the signatures were forged, and others were collected by deceiving those who signed. The legal case will now head to the Maryland courts to decide the validity of the signatures.
Public sentiment in Anne Arundel County seems to be split on the issue. Even if the referendum does make it to the ballot in November, there is a strong chance that it will be defeated by those residents who are looking forward to the new slots casino.
