The gambling debate in Alabama reached a federal level on Wednesday when a US District Judge sided with the Task Force on Illegal Gambling. Country Crossings was looking for a restraining order against the Task Force, keeping them from raiding the establishment.

The judge, Myron Thomson, did not accept the argument from Country Crossing attorneys that the facility had no remedy in state court that could decide the issue. In an earlier ruling, Thomson had asked both parties to pursue a judgement in state court.

"Today, once again, Governor Riley and John Tyson are attempting to distort a ruling from Judge Thomson that simply denied our request for an injunction to keep the Governor's illegal task force from destroying our property," said Jay Walker, Spokesman for Country Crossings, in a written statement.

In Macon County, a judge issued an order that will temporarily keep the task force from raiding the VictoryLand facility in the county. VictoryLand has re-opened after the order was issued late last week.

Country Crossings and VictoryLand are two of the largest employers in Alabama. The two establishments had shut down for fear of a task force raid several weeks ago. Country Crossings will remain closed until legislators finish debating the gambling issue.

Lawmakers have proposed a bill that would call for voters to decide the future of gambling in Alabama. With frustration over the issue escalating in recent months, it figures to be one of the key issues for candidates in the upcoming election.
