Crist And Seminoles Agree On Gambling Compact In Florida
The governor of Florida, Charlie Crist, and the Seminole Indians, were asked to do something these past few weeks that they had already done back in 2007. They were to come up with an agreement on a gambling compact.
For the second time in less than two years, the governor and the Seminoles reached an agreement. This compact, which was signed on Monday, was a little more friendly to the demands of the state legislature.
Concessions were made on both sides. The state had to agree to allow blackjack and baccarat at all seven Seminole casinos in the state. The Seminoles agreed to waive their exclusivity rights in Broward and Miami-Dade Counties.
If the counties decided to allow blackjack at their pari-mutuel facilities, the Seminoles amount that they pay to the state would be reduced by half. The main provision, however, is that the payments are cut only if revenue at the Seminole casinos are lower than the previous year.
The compact will still have to be discussed by legislators. It is expected that Governor Crist will call a special session in October where lawmakers will have the opportunity to ratify the agreement.
The pari-mutuels will be watching the developments of that special session closely. If the compact is successfully ratified, the pari-mutuels will gain longer casino operation hours, and higher limits for their poker games. They will also receive a lower tax rate.
