Deceased Citizens Sign Casino Gambling Petition in Ohio

The Summit County Board of Elections has called in the county sheriff to investigate possible fraud in the 'Learn and Earn' campaign in which several dead citizens signed a petition for a casino gambling amendment to be placed on the November ballot in Ohio.

Board chairman Wayne Jones said he is troubled by the fraudulent petition signatures for the casino gambling initiative. Some names belong to the deceased and some do not match signatures on record, according to several elections workers.

According to the Elections board, they have found only 23,000 valid signatures among the 59,000 submitted. A spokeswoman for the "Learn and Earn" campaign said bad signatures are common in petition drives, especially in poor urban areas. Even in rural country areas, she said signatures are only 60 to 70 percent true.
