DeLeo's Casino Gambling Plan Could Bring 18,000 Jobs To Mass.
House Speaker Robert DeLeo finally unveiled his casino gambling legislation on Thursday, and it came with some strong feelings from the lawmaker. Among the most obvious of points in the legislation is DeLeo's belief that the new gambling will bring 18,000 jobs to Massachusetts.
Unemployment is an area where many state governments are focusing in the wake of the economic recession. The top idea to combat unemployment rates is expanded gambling, and that is what DeLeo proposed to fellow lawmakers.
"The legislation that I'm going to be proposing here today is a jobs bill," said DeLeo, to other lawmakers. "It's not a cure-all. I never said it was a cure-all, but we are at a time as everyone here appreciates, where we have to maximize every single dollar and take advantage of each and every opportunity to grow our economy and that's what this bill does."
On April 13th, the Massachusetts House will begin debating DeLeo's proposal. Governor Duval Patrick has not said whether he will back the legislation, but the governor does not approve of the slot provisions for state racetracks.
DeLeo's bill calls for two new major casino resorts in Massachusetts. The House Speaker has all along wanted to help the ailing tracks, so included in the bill is the allowance of up to 750 slot machines at each of the four racetracks in the state.
Senate President Therese Murray is behind expanded gambling. If the House approves the bill, it would then head to the Senate where Murray would be called upon to gather votes in favor of passing the bill.
