Governor Robert Riley has received a lot of opposition to his random raids on some of the biggest employers in Alabama. Riley and his Task Force on Illegal Gambling have been carrying out raids for the better part of the past year, but Democratic leaders have now had enough.

Senator Lowell Barron, a powerful figure in Alabama politics, is calling for voters in the state to decide the issue that has divided lawmakers. The issue has heated up as of late, and there are many battles currently taking up time on the dockets of courts throughout the state.

"It needs to be settled once and for all," said Barron, "We need to pass legislation putting the issue out to voters. Let voters decide if they want to tax and regulate gambling in this state."

The opinion of Barron is one that is shared by other lawmakers, but a vote of the people of Alabama could be the last thing that the governor or his Task Force would be in favor of. Many Alabama residents have become upset with the way Riley has forced his Task Force raids on these gambling establishments.

Country Crossings and VictoryLand are the two entertainment facilities that have been targeted of late, and they employ thousands of people in a state that is struggling economically. The recent raid attempts have caused Country Crossings to close this past weekend, leaving employees without work.

In addition to the dispute over the legality of the bingo halls, lawmakers are also calling for the removal of John Tyson as the head of the Task Force. Legislators point to Tyson's campaign contributions that came from gambling interests when he was running for Attorney General of Alabama as the reason he should be replaced.
