Doyle Vetoes Legislative Role on Casinos
Lots of brats, but awfully hot Veterans to get free tuition at UW, tech colleges Booster seats needed for kids 4-7 as of Thursday. Governor Jim Doyle on Friday vetoed a Republican bill that would have given the Legislature the power to approve off-reservation tribal casinos.
Under federal law, off-reservation casinos in Wisconsin require approval from the governor and the U. S. Bureau of Indian Affairs, which must agree the proposal would help the tribe without hurting the surrounding community. The bill would have stripped Doyle of that power, allowing him to concur with the bureau only if the Legislature let him. "Congress recognized the inherent practical difficulties in involving multiple parties in the concurrence process," Doyle wrote in his veto message.
