Even With Gambling Expansion In California, Opponents Say No

In the state of California, the casino gambling industry has become one of the most relied on for state revenue. Governor Schwarzenegger has done everything in his power to ensure that casino gambling becomes a mainstay in the state for decades to come.

Just because there has been plenty of expansion does not mean there are not groups that are attempting to stop the growth. The California Coalition Against Gambling Expansion is one such group. They are led by the rev. James Butler.

The group does not have the millions of dollars that other lobbying groups have, so they must take a different approach to how they voice their opinions. Butler has a mailing list of almost 10,000 churches that he uses to keep people informed of any gambling expansion plans.

The latest plan in California is Proposition 1C. The goal of the proposition is to expand the lottery and make the state even more reliable on the revenue money the lottery produces. Butler wants to stop the measure from moving forward.

The state run lottery would produce millions of dollars that would go toward education, but Butler does not see it that way. He feels that there is a moral dilemma with continuing to expand gambling, and he has plenty of people who agree with him.

Unfortunately for Butler, they are not the majority. California voters have continually voted in favor of expanding gambling in the state. California is one of the fastest growing casino markets in the country and the governor does not appear ready to stop that expansion either.
