Final Approval Given For Poland Gambling Ban, US Delays UIGEA
Friday became an important date in the history of gambling in the world. In Poland, the final approval was given to a gambling ban on the same day that the US took steps towards regulating their online gambling industry.
In Poland, President Lech Kaczynski gave the final seal of approval to a ban that lawmakers have been working on for several weeks now. The president believes this ban will help heed off future gambling scandals in the country's government.
Gamblers under the age of eighteen will no longer be able to gamble in any form. Outside of the youngsters, adults will only be allowed to gamble in casinos. The casinos will also pay a higher tax rate than they had been paying in the past.
In the US, there was a victory for online gambling advocates on Friday. The US Department of the Treasury delayed implementation of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act by six months. The original publish date was December 1st, but that has been moved back until June 1st.
Representative Barney Frank now has time to discuss his proposed online gambling legislation with other lawmakers. Frank's plan includes overturning the UIGEA in one piece of legislation, and regulating the Internet gambling industry in the US with another.
Frank has sixty-three co-sponsors for his online gambling regulation Bill. The bill is to be discussed in the upcoming week for the first time by lawmakers. It may still take many months to have the two pieces of legislation passed.
