Florida Casino-Style Slots Under Attack in Court Room
A Florida state appeals court decided to order a retrial in the long-debated casino slot machines issue in South Florida.
A lawsuit filed by the 'Floridians Against Expanded Gambling', says pro-gambling petitioners forged signatures to get the casino slots vote on the statewide ballot in November 2004.
Eventually, Broward County voters back in 2004 overwhelmingly passed the casino slots amendment on that ballot.
But in a 2-1 ruling, the Florida First District Court of Appeal now says having that vote in the first place wasn't right and has ordered a trial. If it turns out that signatures were forged, "the trial court should declare the Slots Initiative invalid," the court wrote.
Lawyers for Pompano Harness Track, Dania Jai-Alai, and Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach are setting the stage for another appeal.
According to the judge, in the meantime, all slots in Florida can continue to operate as normal.
