Florida Senate Pick LeMieux Should Help Frank Online Gambling Bill
Florida's loss in the battle to expand gambling could be the US' gain. On Friday, Governor Charlie Crist appointed George LeMieux to the vacated Senate position of Mel Martinez, and that is good news for those in favor of online gambling regulations in the country.
LeMieux has been working hand in hand with Governor Crist on a gambling compact with the Seminole Indians in Florida. LeMieux was part of the process when Crist first agreed to a deal with the Seminoles back in 2007.
That deal was eventually voided by the state Supreme Court, but but legislators earlier this year agreed to a plan that would revive the compact talks. LeMieux has once again been a lead negotiator with the Seminoles leading up to Monday's deadline to compete the compact.
Now, LeMieux will take his pro-gambling views to the US Senate. There is legislation that has been proposed by Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey that would legalize and regulate online poker. That is in addition to the legislation offered from Rep. Barney Frank.
Frank has been advocating eliminating the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act since its inception back in December of 2006. His first attempt to overturn the law was turned away by a largely Republican Congres last year.
This time around Frank has much more support for Internet gambling regulations. LeMieux, with his pro-gambling stance, can only further help Frank and Menendez' legislation to advance. He will join a growing list of Congress members that understands the need for online gambling regulations in the US.
