Former Judge And Convict Neal Named To Problem Gambling Group

When Deborah A. Neal was appointed a judge in municipal court her life could have been no better. Then, in 2004, Neal experienced the worst of times when she was arrested in a gambling sting at the 7th Street Casino in Kansas City.

Now, after becoming a convicted felon, she will try to help others who have similar gambling problems to the one that cost her the job that she once loved as a judge. Neal has been added to the Missouri Alliance to Curb Problem Gambling in Missouri.

"There was a void on the board of the alliance from those who were in recovery. It's my hope that Deborah will help to enlighten all of us on the alliance about issues individuals in recovery deal with in their lives," said Executive Director of the Missouri Gaming Association, Michael Winter.

Neal was relieved of her duties as a judge after she admitted to taking loans from various lawyers to help feed her gambling addiction. The accepting of the loans was a violation of regulations in the state.

After receiving treatment for her own addiction, Neal is ready to give back and help people stop a problem that once consumed her life. She hopes her story will help inspire others to break their addiction.

"I look forward to being an instrument of hope and healing for individuals, families, and communities affected by problem and compulsive gambling and related potential consequences,' said Neal in a statement.
