Indiana has their share of casino gambling, but some politicians in the state want to find out of the public wants more. Fort Wayne Mayor Tom Henry is pushing for a referendum to gauge public interest.
Henry has not revealed whether he is for or against casino gambling expansion, but he would like to have voter input. His quest is being opposed by some other politicians in the state.
"I don't know why you would want one,' said Representative Jeff Espich. Espich believes that procedure would dictate a public vote later in the process, before licensing of a new casino developer.
Henry, however, believes that before the process moves to that point, the public should have a chance to voice their opinions. The city currently employs a lobbyist because of the economical impact a new casino could have.
Casino gambling expansion has been high on the priority list of lawmakers around the country. With the economic conditions still down, legislators have turned to casinos in order to balance budget deficits.
Fort Worth has spent $90,000 since the start of last year on lobbyists. The lobbyists have been responsible for getting a grasp on public opinion on the casino issue. Republican lawmakers have stated their belief that the city should stop spending money on the gambling lobbyists.
