Frank Now Up To Sixty-Six Co-Sponsors For Online Gambling Bill
Representative Barney Frank is preparing soon to go into the markup phase for his proposed online gambling Bill. In late February, Frank picked up more support for the advancement of that legislation.
Rep. Charles A. Wilson from Ohio's Sixth Congressional District, became the latest to add his name to the list of co-sponsors for House Bill 2267. The Democrat joins a growing group of representatives that are on board for wholesale changes to the current US laws regarding Internet gambling.
In the coming weeks, discussions will begin surrounding the Bill. Frank has until June 1st to work out the details of the legislation and have it passed. Late last year, Frank sought and was granted a delay in the implementation of the rules for the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act.
The rules were set to take affect on December 1st, but Frank and other lawmakers were granted a six month delay. Now, the House Finance Committee Chair has only a couple of months left before that deadline.
The legislation that Frank has proposed has supporters on both sides of the aisle, although the majority of the supporters are fellow Democrats. With the growing tensions between the two parties on Capitol Hill, passage of Frank's Internet gambling legislation may face a tough road.
Frank is seeking to eliminate the UIGEA and set up a regulated online gambling industry in the US. For years Frank has contended that people in the US should have the right to gamble from the comfort of their own homes.
